UNESCO World Heritage Sites

The Philippines is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the top three sites are:

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is the most popular tourist destination spot in the country today after being declared one of the “Seven Wonders of the World”. The Subterranean River National Park features limestone formations inside a cave where an 8.2km navigable river winds through the cave before flowing into the South China Sea. This National Park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range, north-west of Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan Province.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park where a great diversity of marine life is found.  This prime water habitat is home to 350 species of coral and almost 500 species of fish. Its location at the centre of Sulu Sea also protects one of the few remaining colonies of breeding seabirds in the region.

The mystical “Baroque” churches including the San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila stand mightily as a reflection of the Catholic faith of the Filipino people. These churches have designs that adapted to the physical conditions of the Philippines merged with the architectural influences of European church designs.

A Sanctuary of the Rarest Species in the World

The Philippines is home to the biggest fish and the smallest monkey in the world. These are just a few of the rarest animals that one can spot in this unique land whose tropical climate is fertile for the existence of particular specie breeds.

The biggest species of fish in the world is the whale-shark. A large number of these docile and endangered creatures can be found in the waters of Donsol, Sorsogon in the South Luzon region. They are known to inhabit warm tropical seas all over the world. Locally, they are known as the “butanding”. The maximum length of an adult whale shark is 13-14 meters, and their mouth opening is about 1.5 meter wide. The “butanding” is safe for human interaction as the opening to their stomach is too small to fill in a human body. December to January is the “whale-shark-seeing” and “diving-with-the-whale-sharks” season in the Philippines as warm waters bring in the planktons near the shore where they feed on. Whale sharks are known to have the propensity to swim near the warmer water surface.

Considered as the world’s smallest primate is the Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius Syrichta). With two big wide-opened eyes that are incapable of moving since they lack a tapetum (upper eye tissue), these small “monkeys” are only twelve centimeters in height but with an incredible ability to turn their head by 180 degrees. The Philippine Tarsier is an endangered animal that mostly resides in the province of Bohol. Some may also be found in other parts of Eastern Visayas like in Samar and Leyte, and even in Mindanao.

One of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world is the Philippine Eagle. This forest raptor is also known as the monkey-eating-eagle. Considered as one of those nearing extinction, only about an estimated 100 to 300 of these are present today. In the Philippines, they are found in Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. This eagle is distinguished for its 76 centimeter highly-arched bill, an average height of one meter, and nesting ability to reside on trees as high as 30 meters. The Philippine eagle has a long life span. A recorded age of 41 years old was reached by one captive bird that was fully grown from 1934 and died in 1976. One notable characteristic of the Philippine eagle is that it is a monogamous bird that stays and bonds for life with a living mate.
